Although, things are dire more than once. Irene does an amazing job as usual in outwitting threats and saving her life and others. So relatives of their former foes could be involved. But there does appear to be a revenge aspect because it is Irene and Kai as well as their friends targeted. The investigation, constantly interrupted with assassination attempts, seems to point towards old enemies who are dead. She is dismissive of Irene's normal duties. Her ideal is to read books, care for books, and recommend books to others. No Fae has ever been able to enter the library with their chaotic natures so that is one of Irene's challenges because Catherine wants to go to the Library. ![]() More than once, she disobeys orders and causes trouble. She is young and idealistic and very annoying. There is also the matter of Irene's new apprentice, the Fae representative, Catherine. Who better to investigate and solve a mystery than Vale? I was so happy to see him again, more active in this story. ![]() Of course, they can't just run, they have to figure it out so they can go on with their work and so humans won't be injured. He never seems to learn or grow in any way and he attempts suicide several times with no relief of death. He maintains very unhealthy relationships with women, his father, and with drugs and alcohol throughout his entire life. They all are within Oba’s life but they do not link together smoothly, more a collection of anecdotes that piece together who he is and who he becomes. Throughout most of the book the chapters almost function independently of each other. The book is disturbingly casual about this part. This behavior may also have something to do with him being molested by at least two of the adults in his life. It’s almost a pathological phobia that causes him to act out in class and around authority figures. In the beginning he is a class clown who has a literal fear of respect. She returned to Britain and settled in Edinburgh to be near her sister, and attempted to at least finish her book, before looking for another teaching job. It was after her stint teaching in Portugal that Rowling began to write the premise for Harry Potter.
